Plant Extracts are widely used in the production of botanical medicines, food additives, functional foods, household chemicals, cosmetics and more. In the territory of cosmetics, some Plant Extracts have gradually become popular types of cosmetic ingredients due to their safe and stable efficacy. For example, licorice glabra extract and licorice root extract with anti-freckle and whitening effects; jojoba seed oil with moisturizing effect; purslane extract with skin barrier repair function; shea butter with anti-aging function, etc.
On November 21, 2022, the China National Institute of Standardization released the current draft of the national standard “Plant Extract Terminology,” and the public consultation period will end on January 22, 2023.
According to the opinion draft, the global plant extract market is in a period of rapid development, and China has become the world’s largest supplier and consumer. At present, there are more than 300 varieties of Plant Extracts produced in china; there are more than 2,000 companies engaged in the import and export of Plant Extracts Raw Materials.
But China’s current plant extract standards are mostly made so that they can be used for exports. These standards have played a huge role in the export trade of Plant Extracts. However, Plant Extracts re not only exported internationally, but are now also in various domestic use fields, which can no longer meet the needs of industry development and market supervision. For this reason, the formulation of terminology standards for Plant Extracts as soon as possible is conducive to the high-quality development of the industry and the purpose of effective supervision.
To maintain the coordination and uniformity of the standards, the opinion draft recommended quoting or rewriting the terminology and definitions from the original relevant standards for terms that have occurred in other national standards. In order to keep its professionalism and unity, the English word’s meaning is the same as the technical specifications and standards used in other countries.
Based on the summary of terms related to Plant Extracts, raw materials, facilities and equipment, production processes, quality, and market circulation, the standard mainly classifies and defines terms based on the full life cycle of Plant Extracts, involving terms and definitions 163 items. Among them, including plant extract basic terms (30), raw and auxiliary material terms (9), facilities and equipment terms (16), production process terms (52), quality terms (42) and market circulation terms (17 a) and so on.
